Therm-a-Rest's Fast & Light mattresses allow you to experience unrivaled comfort without compromising your goals. Weighing less and packing smaller than other mattresses, they facilitate the kind of high-speed, low-weight camping experience sought by alpinists, adventure racers, and long-distance backpackers alike. Hailing from the Fast & Light series, the Z Lite ultra-light three-season camping mattress is perfect for those go-anywhere, sleep-on-anything treks and bivies where every ounce counts. About Therm-a-Rest
In 1971, Seattle aerospace giant Boeing announced the largest layoff in company history, resulting in 50,000 people losing their jobs. Among the jobless were Jim Lea and Neil Anderson, both engineers who were eager to get back to work. Turning to friend John Burroughs--an avid mountain climber--for ideas, Burroughs suggested a better sleeping mattress, specifically one that was lightweight, warm, and comfortable.

Taking their inspiration from gardening cushions that expelled air as the gardener shifted his or her weight, the duo took a piece of open-cell foam and sandwiched it between two pieces of airtight fabric. Using an old sandwich maker, they melted the fabric onto the foam, creating a bond that was perfectly airtight. After adding a valve, their prototype was ready to test. Within two years, Lea and Anderson had partnered with Burroughs to begin production of Therm-a-Rest pads, the world's first self-inflating mattress. Under the name Cascade Designs, the private, family-owned company has grown into one of the most respected outdoor manufacturers in the world. Still based in Seattle, Cascade Designs sticks to the same fundamental principles it was founded upon: providing relevant and innovative products, exceptional quality, and service that exceeds your expectations.

5 out of 5 stars Light, Compact, Insulated and Economic!   August 1, 2009

I had used air mattress before. It is not very convenient when you have to car pool with your friends and your stuff takes most of the space. So I decided to get something small. I bought this Z-Lite closed cell sleeping Pad at Scheels. I was not so sure about my choice because it was the cheapest sleeping pad I can find. Others are too expensive for me at this time. But I was surprised with how well it worked for me. It is extremely light, easy to pack, it is well insulated so I did not feel the cold ground at night. I am extremely happy with this sleeping pad. I love it so much that later I spent $13 on the sack for my trip to Boundary Waters.

5 out of 5 stars Super Solution   March 8, 2010

NB: Product Color is Yellow (Not Lime Green)

Super product for folks looking for a quick and simple solution for under sleeping bag comfort. Very light weight. Very packable. Very comfortable. And, for folks uninteresting in the storage hassle of preserving the inflatable mattresses, the ZLite is a great alternative. I'm very happy.

5 out of 5 stars Basic but well made   January 8, 2010

Well, this is a very basic foam mat so there's little to be said about it. The mat serves its purpose well, it is very lightweight, it folds into a reasonably small brick and the amount of padding is about right (not too much, but enough). Manage your expectations; this is really just a foam pad - comfort is very limited, but for a minimalist backpacker this pad is the way to go. I like that there are no valves to fail and there's no skin to puncture - no matter what, reasonable padding will be provided.

5 out of 5 stars Must have for hiking   January 7, 2010

Part of my lightweight backpack set up. I bought the small (I am 5'4") and my 6'4" hubby has the regular. They've been wonderful and make a huge difference in comfort after a long day of hiking. Day 2 is met with a lot less aches!

4 out of 5 stars Good for Car Campers   May 19, 2010
M. Kelly (Pasadena, CA United States)
We do mostly car camping, or "tailgate camping" with the kids. We needed two new sleeping pads, so I purchased both this Z-Lite and a Thermarest Base Camp (a much more deluxe version). I slept on the Z-lite, DH on the Base Camp, and in the morning, we both said we had slept soundly and comfortably. The pad folds up accordion-style into a rectangle, which was very convenient for packing in the car. I can't imagine backpacking with the Z-lite though -- it isn't really very compact. For our purposes it was fine, and it is much cheaper than the fancier inflatable pads.
